The TEJAS MK-2 program has reached a major development milestone, with HAL completing assembly of the complete prototype airframe. The first ground run is scheduled for March 2027, followed by a planned first flight later in the year. The completed structure combines the front, centre and rear fuselage sections and allows the program to progress from component and design work into integrated aircraft testing. The MK-2 is intended to be a more capable medium-weight fighter than the MK-1A, incorporating an extended fuselage, close-coupled canards and Uttam AESA radar. The aircraft is expected to eventually replace older Jaguar, Mirage 2000 and MiG-29 fighters, with the IAF planning to acquire more than 100 units subject to production clearance. Four prototypes are planned, with early aircraft concentrating on flight and system validation and later examples moving into weapons testing. The aircraft’s F414-INS6 engine provides 98 kN of thrust, while HAL and GE Aerospace are discussing local engine production and an 80% technology-transfer proposal. The March 2027 ground run will be an important step before flight trials and certification.
