Türkiye’s Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB) took a major step forward in its domestic fighter aircraft initiative by placing an order for the sixth prototype of the KAAN fifth-generation combat jet, according to reports from Turkish defense outlet Ulusavunma. This move highlights the country’s accelerating efforts to field a fully indigenous next-generation fighter, a bold statement of Türkiye’s intent to reduce dependence on foreign defense platforms and assert technological self-reliance in military aviation. The KAAN program is being developed under the leadership of Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) and represents a historic milestone as Türkiye’s first entirely homegrown advanced fighter.
Originally launched as the TF-X project in 2016, the KAAN fighter jet program is a central pillar of Türkiye’s strategy to modernize its air force. In its early phases, the project focused on foundational technologies such as aerodynamic simulations, computer-based modeling, and feasibility studies. The unveiling of a full-scale model at the 2019 Paris Air Show served as Türkiye’s formal declaration of entry into the elite group of nations developing fifth-generation fighters. As the sixth prototype moves into development, Türkiye draws closer to operational deployment and establishing itself as a serious contender in the global military aviation sector.
