Embraer is upgrading its renowned A-29 Super Tucano to include cutting-edge counter-drone capabilities, reinforcing its position as one of the world’s most versatile light attack aircraft. The initiative seeks to boost the A-29’s operational flexibility, offering air forces an affordable yet powerful solution against modern unmanned threats.

The upgraded variant integrates new targeting and communication systems, such as datalinks for real-time threat data and EO/IR sensors for accurate target acquisition and laser designation. Enhanced weapon configurations include laser-guided munitions and twin .50-caliber guns, allowing pilots to effectively engage drones and small airborne targets in contested environments.

Designed for multi-role missions, the A-29 can perform close air support, reconnaissance, air patrol, and training operations. It is capable of operating from rough airstrips and forward bases, making it ideal for border security and counterinsurgency missions. The aircraft’s endurance—over five hours with external tanks—and top speed of 320 knots enable long-duration missions in challenging conditions.

Having accumulated more than 600,000 flight hours worldwide, the A-29 continues to attract new customers. Paraguay recently added the aircraft to its inventory, and the U.S. government has cleared a $100 million deal for Lebanon, underscoring Embraer’s expanding global footprint in the light attack and training aircraft market.
