Bern is planning to reduce its planned purchase of F-35A fighter jets following price increases that exceeded the budget approved by voters in a 2020 referendum. Instead of the originally planned 36 aircraft, Switzerland may acquire roughly 30 jets depending on final negotiations with the United States and manufacturer Lockheed Martin. At the same time, the government is assessing broader defense reforms, including exploring additional European air defense systems alongside the Patriot system already on order.
