Northrop Grumman has delivered the first Airborne Laser Mine Detection System (ALMDS) to South Korea, supporting the nation’s new Korean Mine Countermeasures Helicopter program. The rotary-wing system integrates laser and sensor technology to locate near-surface and floating naval mines, enabling rapid detection without reliance on ship-tethered equipment. The program includes engineering collaboration with Korea Aerospace Industries, ensuring seamless integration into South Korea’s naval fleet. Once operational, the system will enhance the speed and accuracy of mine-clearing operations in both shallow and deep waters. Northrop Grumman’s AN/AES-1 ALMDS has already proven effective with the U.S. Navy and Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, reinforcing allied mine countermeasure capabilities.
