Türkiye’s HÜRJET programme has achieved another important development milestone after the first aircraft destined for the Turkish Air Force successfully completed its maiden flight on August 30.The flight coincided with the country’s Victory Day anniversary, giving the event additional national significance. The aircraft is part of Türkiye’s effort to establish a domestically developed advanced jet trainer and light-combat platform.Developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries, HÜRJET features a single-engine layout and tandem seating for an instructor and student. Its design is intended to provide advanced pilot training before aircrew transition to frontline fighter aircraft.The aircraft is also being developed with supersonic performance, making it more representative of the flight characteristics encountered by modern combat-aircraft pilots than slower conventional trainers.Beyond its training mission, HÜRJET has been positioned as a potential light-combat aircraft. This dual-purpose approach could allow the platform to undertake selected operational missions while continuing to serve as a training aircraft.The maiden flight of the Turkish Air Force aircraft is an important step in the transition from development toward eventual service introduction. Further flight testing will be required to validate performance, avionics, flight-control systems, and other aircraft functions.The programme also demonstrates the expansion of Türkiye’s domestic aerospace capabilities. Developing HÜRJET requires expertise in airframe design, propulsion integration, avionics, manufacturing, and flight-test operations.As testing continues, the aircraft will move through additional evaluation stages before operational deployment. The latest milestone nevertheless represents a significant achievement for Türkiye’s ambition to develop and operate its own advanced military aviation platforms.
