The Tejas Mk2 fighter is being developed as an advanced evolution of India’s indigenous combat aircraft program. Classified as a medium-weight fighter, the aircraft is designed to offer improved range, endurance, and combat capability compared with the earlier Tejas variants. A key design change is the elongated fuselage, which allows for increased internal fuel capacity and space for more advanced avionics systems. This modification helps extend the aircraft’s operational range and improves mission flexibility. The aircraft also features distinctive canards positioned near the front of the fuselage. These aerodynamic surfaces enhance stability and maneuverability, particularly during high-angle-of-attack maneuvers. The Mk2 design relies heavily on modern composite materials that provide greater strength while keeping the aircraft lightweight. These materials also help improve fatigue resistance, allowing the aircraft to operate effectively over thousands of flight hours. Like many modern 4.5-generation fighters, the Tejas Mk2 is expected to achieve an airframe life of around 6,000 to 8,000 hours. Once operational, the aircraft will help replace older fighter platforms while strengthening India’s domestic aerospace capabilities. The Tejas Mk2 therefore represents both a technological upgrade and a step toward greater self-reliance in military aviation.
