USAF Moves Beyond Huey as MH-139A Grey Wolf Enters Initial Operational ServiceThe US Air Force has reached another milestone in its helicopter modernization program with the MH-139 Grey Wolf achieving Initial Operational Capability, beginning the service’s transition from the long-serving UH-1N Huey, which dates back to the Vietnam era.Compared with the Huey, the Grey Wolf offers enhanced defensive systems, around 50 percent more speed, and double the troop capacity. The aircraft is intended to strengthen airborne security, protect convoys, and provide rapid response for missions associated with the ground component of America’s nuclear triad.Additional duties will include search and rescue, disaster relief, and medical evacuation.From Testing to Operational CapabilityThe MH-139A officially reached IOC on August 10, with the milestone announced by the Air Force on August 31. Its entry into service followed a series of demanding tests, aircrew conversion training, and operational milestones led by the 582nd Helicopter Group.The 550th Helicopter Squadron performed the helicopter’s first Initial Operational Test and Evaluation flight in January 2025. In the following year, an MH-139 supported the first operational convoy involving Minuteman III ICBM maintenance and armored-security vehicles.That mission involved a movement of more than 100 miles (161 kilometers) over six hours, with the helicopter completing the operation without refueling.Grey Wolf PerformanceThe Air Force has ordered 38 MH-139A Grey Wolves from Boeing, including a four-aircraft order placed in January 2026.The helicopter is derived from Leonardo’s AW139 15-seat commercial platform, heavily modified for the protection of US nuclear and ballistic-missile facilities.The MH-139A measures 54.8 feet (16.7 meters) in length and 16.4 feet (5 meters) in height. Its maximum takeoff weight is 15,432 pounds (7,000 kilograms).The aircraft has a cruise speed of up to 146 knots (270 kilometers/168 miles per hour) and a maximum speed of 167 knots (309 kilometers/192 miles per hour). It offers a maximum range of 410 nautical miles (472 miles/759 kilometers) and can operate at altitudes up to 20,000 feet (6,096 meters).
