Britain has launched a new phase of Project NYX by selecting four defense firms to design drone wingmen for Apache attack helicopters. The project focuses on developing autonomous unmanned aircraft capable of operating alongside the AH-64E Apache in reconnaissance, strike, and electronic warfare roles. Anduril UK, BAE Systems, Tekever, and Thales have received funding to produce advanced drone concepts featuring AI-enabled operational autonomy and vertical take-off capability. The drones are intended to support Apache crews by handling dangerous battlefield tasks while reducing operational risk and maintenance costs. The Ministry of Defence plans to evaluate the concepts over the coming months before selecting two finalists for prototype development. If successful, the drone wingman capability could become operational before the end of the decade, significantly modernizing the British Army’s combat aviation strategy.
