Lockheed Martin has reached an important development milestone by successfully completing the structural burst test for the second-stage motor case of the Next Generation Interceptor. During the evaluation, engineers pressurized the carbon fiber motor case beyond expected operational limits using a reinforced water-filled test fixture. The component performed as intended, demonstrating sufficient structural strength to withstand launch stresses before reaching its designed failure point. The achievement supports the interceptor program’s forthcoming critical design review and reinforces plans to field the system by 2030. Developed for the Missile Defense Agency, the Next Generation Interceptor will replace aging Ground-Based Interceptors responsible for defending the United States against long-range ballistic missile attacks. The new design incorporates modular construction, multiple kill vehicles, advanced target discrimination technology, and modern digital engineering techniques to enhance performance while reducing development timelines. Lockheed Martin’s newly established missile production facility in Alabama will play a central role in manufacturing the future interceptor fleet.
