The Astra Mk1 BVRAAM is being prepared for a significant range enhancement that could extend its reach from the current figure of roughly 110 km to about 160 km. Range-extension trials are expected later in 2026 after engineers complete further optimisation of the missile. The programme followed consultations between DRDO’s Armament Research and Development Establishment and the IAF after Operation Sindoor. Testing that was originally expected around the middle of the year was reportedly delayed to allow further refinement before the missile enters the trial phase. The upgrade is expected to involve changes to the propulsion system, flight trajectory, guidance and energy-management characteristics. These improvements are intended to help Astra Mk1 retain speed, manoeuvrability and energy at greater distances without fundamentally changing its existing architecture. The missile is already approved for deployment on Su-30MKI and Tejas Mk1/Mk1A fighters, while Rafale integration is expected to expand its operational footprint. Reports suggesting that recovered Chinese PL-15E technology contributed to the Astra upgrade have been denied by DRDO officials. The programme demonstrates India’s increasing emphasis on upgrading established weapons rather than relying exclusively on entirely new designs. Such incremental modernisation can potentially shorten development timelines and provide the IAF with improved capabilities against evolving threats while preserving compatibility with existing aircraft and infrastructure.
