Japan is moving closer to supplying the Philippines with its Type 88 anti-ship missile system following Manila’s interest in enhancing coastal defense capabilities. The missile, currently being phased out from Japanese military service, is a truck-mounted sea-skimming weapon developed for long-range anti-ship operations. Featuring a combat range of over 100 kilometers, the system has served Japan’s Ground Self-Defense Force for decades before being replaced by the more advanced Type 12 missile. The potential export became possible after Tokyo relaxed its defense export policies to allow greater cooperation with strategic security partners. In addition to missile transfers, Japan is also supporting the Philippines with maritime patrol aircraft and naval platforms. The proposed deal highlights growing defense ties between both countries and reflects wider efforts to improve regional deterrence and maritime security across the Indo-Pacific region.
