HAL has indicated that the long-standing engine supply challenges affecting the Tejas Mk1A fighter aircraft program may soon ease, with GE Aerospace expected to deliver more F404-IN20 engines over the coming months. HAL Chairman Ravi Kota stated that six engines have already been received, while an additional 15 to 20 units are expected by the end of the year. The Tejas Mk1A program had faced major delays after global supply chain disruptions affected GE Aerospace’s manufacturing timelines for the F404 engines. These setbacks impacted HAL’s ability to maintain steady production of the indigenous fighter aircraft under the Indian Air Force’s large contract for 83 jets. HAL explained that some of the engines already delivered are currently undergoing testing and integration procedures, while further validation work continues on the aircraft platform. The expected arrival of additional engines is likely to help HAL increase aircraft assembly and stabilize production schedules over the next few years. Industry observers believe the improved engine supply could allow a significant rise in Tejas Mk1A production rates during FY27 and FY28. The Indian Air Force is particularly focused on the project because the Tejas Mk1A is expected to become a major component of India’s future fighter fleet as older MiG aircraft retire from service. The development also highlights the importance of supply chain stability for large-scale indigenous defence manufacturing programs.
