Indian startup Kalavinka Technologies has introduced the Nyx MK-I, an autonomous loitering munition intended to maintain operations in environments affected by GPS denial and electronic warfare.The system was developed by a team of engineers from IIT Kharagpur and combines AI-enabled autonomy, sensor-based navigation, and a cost-conscious manufacturing philosophy. Its development reflects the increasing involvement of Indian startups in advanced unmanned military systems.A key feature of Nyx MK-I is its ability to conduct missions without continuous dependence on satellite navigation or external communication. The platform uses onboard sensing and artificial intelligence to support navigation when GNSS signals are unavailable, jammed, or spoofed.This operating model is particularly relevant to modern battlefields, where electronic warfare can interfere with conventional drone communications and navigation systems. Reduced reliance on external signals can help an autonomous platform remain functional under such conditions.Kalavinka says development has been carried out in-house across multiple technical disciplines, including aerodynamic design, simulation, embedded computing, and software development. This supports the company’s goal of creating a domestically developed and scalable unmanned system.The Nyx MK-I is intended to perform precision attacks against tactical targets and vulnerable positions. Its loitering capability allows the system to remain over an assigned area while searching for an appropriate target before conducting an engagement.The platform also emphasizes affordable mass production and attritability. Instead of treating each unmanned system as a high-value asset, the concept focuses on producing systems economically enough to be deployed in larger numbers.Another proposed capability is coordinated swarm operation, allowing multiple systems to work together during an attack. Coordinated autonomous platforms could create additional challenges for air-defense systems by presenting multiple threats simultaneously.AI-based coordination can help manage these distributed operations while reducing the level of direct control required from human operators. The emphasis on autonomous operation also reflects the growing importance of electromagnetic resilience in modern military systems.The Nyx MK-I is part of a wider expansion of India’s private defense-technology ecosystem, with startups increasingly developing autonomous aircraft, robotics, sensors, AI systems, and other military technologies.
