Greece is upgrading its ageing fleet of Mercedes G-Class military vehicles as part of an effort to bring the decades-old platforms closer to current operational standards. The vehicles, which are around 30 years old, are being refurbished with a combination of new mechanical systems and redesigned interiors. Hellenic Vehicle Industries (ELVO) is responsible for the overhaul. Among the principal changes will be new engines intended to improve the vehicles’ performance. Automatic transmissions will also be installed, reducing the operational workload associated with the original transmission systems and simplifying vehicle handling. The refurbishment is not limited to the drivetrain. Electric air-conditioning equipment will be introduced to improve cabin climate management, an important consideration for crews operating the vehicles in demanding environments. Interior modifications will include redesigned layouts and more ergonomic seating, with armrests added to improve crew comfort. Through these changes, Greece is seeking to retain the utility of its existing Mercedes G-Class military fleet while updating key components that affect mobility, ease of operation and crew conditions.
