The induction of INS Malvan represents another important enhancement to the Indian Navy’s dedicated shallow-water anti-submarine warfare capability. Designed specifically for operations close to the coastline, the Mahe-class platform combines advanced indigenous sonar systems with specialized underwater combat equipment capable of detecting and engaging hostile submarines operating in acoustically challenging coastal waters. Equipped with lightweight torpedoes, anti-submarine rocket launchers, and modern combat management systems, the vessel significantly improves underwater surveillance and rapid response capability. Built with substantial indigenous participation at Cochin Shipyard Limited, INS Malvan also reinforces India’s objective of expanding domestic naval manufacturing under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. Together with other ships of its class, the vessel contributes to a layered maritime defense network that enhances protection of ports, offshore assets, shipping routes, and strategic coastal infrastructure across the Indian Ocean.
