Malaysian Army Expands Tactical Mobility With 263 New VehiclesThe Malaysian Army is strengthening its battlefield mobility and scouting capabilities through the purchase of 263 tactical vehicles valued at 164.91 million ringgit ($40.8 million).The fleet addition consists of 163 Tedung, or Cobra, 4×4 weapon carriers along with 100 Kala, or Scorpion, high-mobility reconnaissance vehicles.Defence Minister Khaled Nordin unveiled the platforms during an official ceremony involving High Point Worldwide, the Wangsa Maju-based industrial partner supporting the program. The event marked the first public appearance of the vehicles in their final green Army paint scheme.Two-Contract AcquisitionThe procurement has been divided into two contracts by the Malaysian government.The first package, worth 92.91 million ringgit ($23 million), provides 80 Cobra automatic grenade launcher carriers and 83 heavy-machine-gun variants.Built around the Agrale Marruá AM250 Brazilian double-cab utility and transport vehicle, the Cobra uses a 170-horsepower Cummins diesel engine and permanent 4×4 drive. Its design can also be modified for command, radio, and cannon-towing missions, allowing the Army to adapt the fleet to different operational needs.The remaining 72-million-ringgit ($17.8-million) contract covers the Scorpion reconnaissance vehicles. The platform employs a buggy-style chassis intended to provide infantry units with improved mobility during reconnaissance operations.Malaysia has not disclosed the vehicle on which the Scorpion design is based. However, the platform is powered by a Rotax 900cc ACEI turbocharged engine delivering as much as 200 horsepower. It has seating for four fully equipped warfighters and is designed to operate effectively over rugged and challenging terrain.
