The Indian Navy is set to commission INS Malvan, the second vessel of the indigenous Mahe-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft program, further strengthening India’s coastal defense and underwater surveillance network. Purpose-built for operations in shallow littoral environments, the vessel is equipped with advanced indigenous sonar systems, lightweight torpedoes, and anti-submarine rocket launchers capable of detecting and engaging modern diesel-electric submarines operating close to the coastline. Constructed by Cochin Shipyard Limited with a high level of indigenous content, the platform reflects India’s ongoing efforts to expand domestic naval manufacturing under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. Alongside INS Mahe, the new vessel contributes to a specialized fleet designed to improve underwater domain awareness, protect critical maritime infrastructure, and reinforce layered coastal security throughout the Indian Ocean region.
