Germany is strengthening its naval air-defense modernization through the development of an operational high-energy laser weapon jointly produced by MBDA Deutschland and Rheinmetall. The project encompasses the complete engagement architecture, including target detection, precision tracking, command-and-control integration, and directed-energy engagement. Building on successful operational trials aboard the frigate Sachsen, the future laser system is intended to provide rapid-response defense against drones, missiles, and asymmetric aerial threats while complementing conventional missile and artillery systems. The initiative also reinforces Germany’s domestic defense manufacturing capabilities through localized development, integration, and production.
