Belgium has taken a major step toward modernizing its national air defense architecture by signing a cooperation agreement with the Netherlands to procure ten National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS) from Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace. The agreement allows Belgium to leverage the Dutch procurement framework, accelerating acquisition while promoting interoperability between neighboring NATO members. Designed to counter modern aerial threats—including combat aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and unmanned aerial systems—NASAMS will become a key element of Belgium’s layered air defense network. The system integrates advanced Sentinel 3D radar, electro-optical sensors, distributed fire-control units, and mobile launchers equipped with AIM-120 AMRAAM and AIM-9X Sidewinder interceptors. One of the first operational batteries will be deployed to safeguard the strategically important Port of Antwerp, one of Europe’s busiest logistics hubs. The procurement forms part of Belgium’s broader multibillion-euro defense modernization plan, which also includes investments in long-range missile defense. By joining the growing list of NATO operators, Belgium significantly improves its ability to protect critical infrastructure, military installations, and civilian population centers against increasingly sophisticated airborne threats while enhancing collective European air-defense interoperability.
