India is moving forward with the deployment of fixed-wing High Altitude Pseudo Satellite (HAPS) platforms to expand persistent intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities ahead of its next-generation military satellite network. Designed to operate in the stratosphere above 20 kilometers, these solar-powered aircraft combine long-endurance flight with advanced surveillance payloads, enabling continuous monitoring of strategic regions for extended durations. Equipped with electro-optical, infrared, synthetic aperture radar, and SIGINT systems, HAPS platforms offer a cost-effective solution for border security, maritime domain awareness, communications relay, and disaster response. Ongoing indigenous development by CSIR-NAL and NewSpace Research & Technologies reflects India’s commitment to strengthening self-reliant aerospace technologies while improving real-time situational awareness across land and maritime frontiers.
