New Delhi is pursuing a large modernization effort for its tactical airlift fleet by planning the purchase of 60 transport aircraft for the Indian Air Force. The program combines imported aircraft with domestic production, allowing most of the fleet to be assembled in India with local components. The new transports will support troop movement, cargo delivery, and supply missions in remote and high-altitude regions including border areas such as Ladakh. Several global aerospace companies are expected to compete for the contract.
