The Netherlands is strengthening its counter-drone defenses through a new Kongsberg-Oshkosh integration effort involving the PROTECTOR RS4 remote weapon station and JLTV tactical vehicles. Under the agreement, RS4 systems equipped with counter-UAS software will be installed on Oshkosh Joint Light Tactical Vehicles intended for Dutch service. The RS4 can accommodate several weapon types, including small and medium-caliber guns and anti-tank missiles. Its counter-UAS software enables the weapon station to identify, track, and engage unmanned aircraft. Kongsberg is additionally integrating Echodyne’s MESA radar with its RS4 and RS6 stations. The radar adds tracking information such as target range, bearing, and rate of movement, improving the system’s ability to detect drones and calculate firing solutions. Separately, Oshkosh Defense has been selected to produce 150 Dutch Expeditionary Patrol Vehicles based on the JLTV design. These developments form part of a broader Dutch modernization programme focused heavily on the growing drone threat. Boxer armored vehicles are receiving anti-UAS upgrades, while the Dutch government has ordered 100 Robin Radar systems to detect drones around military bases, infrastructure, and other sensitive locations. The Netherlands is also acquiring Skyranger air-defense systems from Rheinmetall Air Defence, with deliveries expected in 2028 and 2029. In another initiative, the Dutch Ministry of Defence has partnered with EOS to advance the Apollo high-energy laser counter-drone system toward operational deployment and explore manufacturing opportunities within the Netherlands.
