The Netherlands has signed a framework agreement with Saab for the delivery of Barracuda Mobile Camouflage Systems designed to improve the survivability of Dutch military vehicles.The defense ministry has placed an initial order under the agreement, with deliveries planned over the next several years. The first platforms to receive the system are expected to include Fennek reconnaissance vehicles and Panzerhaubitze 2000NL artillery systems. The framework could later be expanded to other vehicle categories.The 10-year arrangement is expected to cover hundreds of camouflage systems, giving Dutch forces a long-term method for reducing the detectability of their ground platforms.Saab’s Barracuda MCS uses specialized camouflage materials to reduce a vehicle’s visual, infrared, and electromagnetic signatures. By lowering these signatures, the technology can make armored and support vehicles harder for enemy sensors to locate and track.The system can be adapted to different environments, with configurations available for woodland, urban, and Arctic terrain. It also incorporates heat-management properties that can reduce vehicle temperatures and help protect onboard equipment and personnel from excessive thermal exposure.The Dutch procurement is therefore intended not only to improve concealment but also to enhance the overall survivability and endurance of military vehicles operating in contested environments.
