Taiwan is moving ahead with plans to field 246 locally developed reconnaissance vehicles between 2028 and 2033, strengthening the army’s battlefield surveillance and rapid-response capabilities. Developed under the Iron Cavalry Project, the vehicle will support reconnaissance, security patrol, and counterattack missions while operating alongside the existing Humvee fleet. The Armaments Bureau is coordinating the program, with Taiwanese research institutions contributing mobility and sensor technologies. The vehicle features four-wheel drive, a 205-horsepower engine, a maximum speed of 100 kilometers per hour, and a range of approximately 500 kilometers. A telescopic mast-mounted electro-optical sensor provides reconnaissance coverage of up to 12 kilometers, while a remotely controlled 12.7mm weapon station offers self-defense and fire-support capabilities. The new platform is part of Taiwan’s broader military modernization and resilience efforts amid growing security concerns. The upcoming Han Kuang exercises are also expected to examine Taiwan’s ability to maintain defense production, logistics, and communications during a potential conflict.
