Airbus Helicopters has delivered the first NH90 Sea Tiger helicopter to the German Navy, with the aircraft handed over at Nordholz Naval Air Base under the NHIndustries program. The delivery marks the beginning of a fleet renewal effort aimed at enhancing Germany’s naval aviation and maritime combat readiness.

The Sea Tiger acquisition is part of a 2020 agreement covering 31 helicopters, with final deliveries scheduled by 2030. The new platform will gradually phase out the long-serving Mk88A Sea Lynx helicopters, which have been in frontline naval service for more than four decades.

Optimized for maritime combat operations, the NH90 Sea Tiger will conduct anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare, as well as intelligence, surveillance, transport, and reconnaissance missions. The helicopters will support operations in the Baltic Sea and the North Atlantic, contributing to both German naval defense and NATO alliance missions.

The aircraft will operate alongside the navy’s NH90 Sea Lion fleet, consisting of 18 helicopters delivered between 2019 and 2023. These Sea Lion variants are primarily assigned to search and rescue duties and maritime logistics operations from German Navy replenishment ships.

Tailored to Germany’s operational needs, the Sea Tiger features upgraded sensor and mission systems, including a modern electro-optical targeting system, improved electronic warfare capabilities, dipping sonar, and sonobuoy deployment. Its armament package includes naval torpedoes and missiles, allowing it to engage surface and subsurface threats.

The first Sea Tiger completed its initial flight in Bavaria in late 2023, followed by additional testing in 2024. Ahead of the aircraft’s arrival, the German Navy also contracted Reiser Simulation and Training in November 2024 to provide a maintenance training rig, preparing crews for complex technical procedures.
