Airbus Helicopters has delivered the first H160 helicopter to France’s National Gendarmerie, reinforcing the service’s transition toward a more capable and modern helicopter fleet. The aircraft was handed over at the manufacturer’s Marignane production site, marking the initial delivery from a 10-unit contract signed in 2021.

The H160 is the largest and most advanced helicopter to be introduced into the Gendarmerie’s inventory and is intended to broaden its operational capabilities across domestic security, emergency response, and public service missions. With delivery complete, the aircraft will now enter a structured acceptance, testing, and operational integration phase, expected to conclude by early 2027.

During this period, flight crews and maintenance personnel will undergo extensive training and certification, while new operational doctrines and maintenance procedures are established. Airbus Helicopters will provide long-term fleet support under a dedicated agreement that includes technical assistance, digital operational tools, and spare parts availability at four regional bases.

The H160 induction complements the earlier arrival of the H145, introduced as part of the Gendarmerie’s ongoing fleet renewal initiative. Both helicopters share key technologies, including Helionix avionics and mission systems, enabling streamlined maintenance, reduced training requirements, and improved interoperability during joint missions.

Built for multi-role operations, the H160 features advanced aerodynamics, next-generation avionics, and enhanced performance. The helicopter is capable of cruising at 158 mph, carrying a useful load of up to 2,000 kg, and is powered by twin Safran Arrano 1A engines, positioning it as a high-performance asset for France’s internal security forces.
