Armenia Advances $3B Su-30MKI Fighter Purchase, Strengthening Defense Ties With India Armenia is finalizing a landmark agreement with India to procure Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL)-built Su-30MKI multirole fighters in a deal estimated between $2.5 and $3 billion. The contract, now in advanced negotiation stages, would represent Armenia’s largest defense acquisition to date and underscore New Delhi’s growing defense export ambitions. The move follows Azerbaijan’s acquisition of 40 JF-17C Block-III fighters from Pakistan, prompting Yerevan to strengthen its airpower and deterrence capabilities. Under the anticipated agreement, HAL will begin deliveries by 2027, tailoring the aircraft with indigenous Indian systems including the Uttam AESA radar, Astra beyond-visual-range missiles, and advanced electronic warfare suites. These upgrades would make the Armenian Su-30MKIs among the most advanced export configurations globally, with enhanced survivability and networked strike capabilities. The Su-30MKI, first inducted into Indian service in 2002, has evolved through successive modernization programs and remains the backbone of India’s air combat fleet. Recent upgrades under the “Super Sukhoi” initiative aim to retrofit 150 aircraft with digital cockpits, next-generation sensors, and improved weapons integration. For Armenia, the acquisition signifies both a deterrent posture and an alignment with India’s emerging defense-industrial network. The deal is also a signal to regional powers that Yerevan seeks to diversify its military dependencies beyond Russia. With HAL marketing the Su-30MKI to several countries, including Malaysia and Egypt, the Armenian order could reinforce India’s profile as a credible defense exporter in the Eurasian security landscape.
