Reports indicate that Russia has begun manufacturing Sukhoi Su-34M supersonic fighter-bombers for Algeria, reinforcing prior rumors of a significant arms deal between Moscow and a foreign buyer. Evidence from satellite images, reviewed by Military Watch Magazine, revealed several Su-34Ms featuring a unique desert brown-and-yellow paint scheme. This pattern, commonly used by Algeria, points toward the North African nation as the likely recipient.

Although the initial analysis cited Algeria and North Korea as possible destinations for the jets, the camouflage and Algeria’s historical purchasing patterns strongly suggest the aircraft are intended for its air force. Business Insider Africa previously noted that in late 2019, Algeria signed contracts with Russia for 14 Su-34MEs, 14 Su-57Es, and 14 Su-35Es, with delivery schedules extending until 2025.

The Su-34M acquisition would replace Algeria’s long-serving Su-24M strike aircraft, marking a major modernization of its aerial strike capabilities. Becoming the first foreign operator of the Su-34M would further cement Algeria’s position as the most heavily armed air power in Africa, while also signaling Russia’s deepening defense footprint in the region.

With a relatively low price tag of under $10 million per aircraft, the Su-34M presents Algeria with a powerful yet cost-efficient solution to enhance its bomber and strike capabilities. The aircraft’s extended range and payload capacity could allow Algeria to extend its operational reach far beyond its borders, potentially striking targets across the Middle East or even into central Europe.
