The Royal Thai Air Force has finalized the purchase of four Saab JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets from Sweden, valued at $600 million. The approval follows closely on the heels of a deadly border skirmish with Cambodia that triggered renewed defense concerns.
This deal, originally outlined in June, is a central part of Thailand’s initiative to upgrade its air power. The recent five-day confrontation with Cambodian forces, which resulted in over 40 fatalities, saw Thailand relying on its aging F-16 fleet for cross-border strikes.
The procurement committee, after a 10-month evaluation process, selected the Swedish-made Gripens over the latest US F-16s. The review prioritized operational readiness and strategic compatibility with Thailand’s existing aircraft.
With 11 Gripens already in service and F-16s dating back to the 1980s, the new additions mark a significant step in enhancing aerial defense. The jets will be acquired under the nation’s 200 billion baht ($6 billion) annual defense budget.
