South Korea has announced plans to acquire 36 more AH-64E Apache Guardian attack helicopters from the United States, signaling a significant upgrade to its rotary-wing combat fleet. The move underscores Seoul’s focus on strengthening its military capabilities amid rising tensions in the region and the persistent threat from North Korea. Currently, the South Korean Army operates 36 AH-64E Apaches and 55 older AH-1F Cobras. The AH-64E, introduced between 2016 and 2017, features state-of-the-art targeting systems, long-range weaponry, and advanced network integration. In contrast, the decades-old Cobras suffer from outdated systems and reduced survivability but remain operational until a complete replacement is made. This new procurement aims to consolidate South Korea’s attack helicopter forces with a modern, cohesive fleet capable of delivering greater precision and combat power.
