The Indian Navy has long sought advanced fighter jets capable of operating from its aircraft carriers. One of the boldest considerations was the potential acquisition of the F-35B Lightning II, the short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) variant of Lockheed Martin’s fifth-generation stealth fighter. With its unique ability to operate from smaller decks, similar to helicopters, the F-35B emerged as a strong contender to replace the aging Sea Harrier jump jets and to serve alongside the Navy’s MiG-29K fleet, enhancing operational flexibility and combat capability.
