The Indian Air Force’s (IAF) Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) tender, often referred to as the “mother of all defense deals,” saw two of Europe’s leading fighter jets—the Dassault Rafale and the Eurofighter Typhoon—compete head-to-head. Both aircraft demonstrated exceptional capabilities, with the Eurofighter passing the IAF’s stringent technical evaluations. However, the Rafale ultimately won the contract, with pricing being a key factor. This article compares the Rafale and Eurofighter Typhoon in terms of price and capabilities to explore why the Rafale secured the deal and why, despite its strengths, the Eurofighter fell short. A major reason for the Eurofighter’s loss in the MMRCA tender was its higher cost; both its initial procurement and life-cycle costs were significantly higher than those of the Dassault Rafale.
