Australia has received US approval for a potential $300 million package of Tomahawk mission-planning, communications and technical support equipment. The proposed foreign military sale covers a Theater Mission Planning Center, associated planning software, communications systems and programme-management, engineering, training and logistical services. According to the US State Department, the equipment would help Australia develop its Tomahawk capabilities, strengthen deterrence and improve coordination with American and allied naval forces. Four companies—BAE Systems, Tapestry Solutions, Peraton and Leidos—are expected to serve as the principal contractors. The Tomahawk, manufactured by Raytheon, is a ship- and submarine-launched cruise missile designed for precision strikes over distances of up to 1,000 miles. Block IV models support in-flight retargeting and loitering, while Block V introduces updated navigation, communications and warhead features. The Block Va variant is designed to engage moving maritime targets, and Block Vb is intended for a broader range of land targets. Australia’s 2023 agreement covered more than 200 missiles worth $830 million, although the exact quantity was not disclosed.
