Portugal is expanding its strategic airlift capability with the acquisition of a sixth KC-390 Millennium transport aircraft. The purchase, made official through an amendment signed with Embraer Defense & Security, also includes options for 10 more aircraft available to NATO allies. This development reinforces Portugal’s 2019 agreement with the Brazilian company, which initially aimed to replace the country’s long-serving C-130 Hercules transports.
Currently, the Portuguese Air Force operates two KC-390s, delivered in 2022 and 2024. Under the first contract, three more are scheduled for delivery by 2027. The addition of a sixth aircraft and future options positions Portugal as one of the leading European operators of the Millennium. Designed for versatility, the 35-meter-long KC-390 can execute a wide range of missions, from troop and cargo transport to airdrops, medevac operations, firefighting, search and rescue, and humanitarian assistance.
The platform is equipped to carry 26,000 kilograms of cargo or 80 personnel, with an impressive fuel capacity that supports long-range missions. Its twin IAE V2500-E5 engines deliver speeds exceeding 500 knots, a ceiling of 11,000 meters, and a maximum range of 4,570 nautical miles. These specifications ensure the Millennium is suited for both military and humanitarian tasks across global theaters.
Additionally, the aircraft can be configured with advanced defensive technologies, including electronic warfare suites and countermeasures against missile threats, increasing its survivability in contested environments. Since its introduction into Brazilian service in 2019, the KC-390 has gained international recognition, joining the fleets of Portugal in 2023 and Hungary in 2024. With 11 global customers, including seven NATO nations, the Millennium is steadily cementing its role as one of the most capable next-generation airlifters.
