In a strategic move to boost its defense capabilities, Australia will spend 2.12 billion Australian dollars ($1.39 billion USD) on acquiring the latest models of AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles. The procurement will enhance both air-to-air combat effectiveness and ground-based air defense across multiple military branches.
This acquisition follows a US State Department approval earlier this year, permitting the sale of up to 200 AIM-120C and AIM-120D missiles to Canberra. The advanced AIM-120D-3 version will be outfitted on Royal Australian Air Force fighter jets including the F/A-18F Super Hornet, EA-18G Growler, and F-35A Lightning II, significantly improving their engagement range and targeting precision.
The AIM-120C-8 missiles are designated for integration into the NASAMS platform, which the Australian Army’s 10th Brigade is currently deploying to reinforce national airspace defense. This addition marks a step forward in safeguarding key assets from aerial threats.
The missile systems will be procured through the U.S. Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program, ensuring streamlined delivery and logistical support.
