Germany is set to receive a major boost to its air combat capabilities after the US State Department approved a proposed $1.23 billion missile package. The deal covers up to 400 AIM-120D-3 AMRAAMs, associated guidance kits, telemetry systems, encryption gear, training, and software support. RTX is listed as the prime contractor. The purchase aligns with Berlin’s plans to field the F-35A and strengthens NATO’s ability to conduct integrated air defense operations across Europe.
This notification goes beyond a standard missile procurement, representing a turnkey solution aimed at providing Germany with a fully integrated missile capability. With provisions for training, publications, and sustainment, the package reflects Berlin’s commitment to creating a long-term missile ecosystem rather than a one-time purchase.
The AIM-120D-3 is the newest variant of the AMRAAM series, which has been central to Western air dominance since its introduction. Unlike its predecessors, the D-3 is built around advanced digital electronics and computing power, enabling continuous software-driven upgrades. It also features a redesigned hardware suite, refined flight controls, and GPS-assisted navigation, all of which expand its engagement envelope. Although performance figures remain classified, the missile is widely regarded for its greater reach and survivability against advanced threats.
Technically, the D-3 combines an active radar seeker with inertial navigation and a secure two-way datalink. This allows it to receive target updates mid-flight from platforms such as the F-35, which can leverage sensor fusion to generate accurate tracks at long range.
