India and Brazil are discussing a possible barter-style defence deal that could link aircraft and missile purchases between the two countries. Under this proposal, Brazil may acquire India’s Tejas Mk1A fighter jets and Akash air defence systems, while India could purchase Embraer’s C-390M military transport aircraft. The idea is part of a broader effort to strengthen defence trade while reducing direct financial costs. The C-390M is being considered for India’s Medium Transport Aircraft programme, which aims to replace older transport aircraft fleets. India is also looking for strong technology transfer and local production involvement. Brazil, meanwhile, is interested in modernising its air force with Tejas jets and improving air defence with Akash systems. The barter model would allow both countries to balance procurement costs through mutual defence purchases instead of traditional payments. However, the deal depends on several factors, including engine supply for Tejas aircraft, long-term maintenance support, and technical compatibility of the transport aircraft with Indian requirements. If successful, this arrangement could become a new model for international defence cooperation, combining exports and imports in a single structured framework.
