The Kenyan military has received a SPYDER surface-to-air missile system from Israel, underscoring Nairobi’s efforts to modernize its defense forces and diversify international security partnerships. Valued at approximately $26.4 million, the delivery arrived aboard an Israeli cargo aircraft just months after Kenya finalized a financing agreement with Israel to support the purchase.
Manufactured by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, the SPYDER air defense system offers multi-layered protection against aircraft, helicopters, and drones, providing Kenya with a robust response to aerial threats. The capability is particularly relevant in East Africa, where terrorism, insurgency, and regional instability continue to pose security challenges.
The acquisition comes amid a broader push by President William Ruto’s administration to strengthen Kenya’s defense posture. The $26-million loan arrangement with Israel reflects a growing strategic alignment aimed at boosting Kenya’s airspace security and rapid interception capabilities.
Alongside Israeli support, Kenya has continued to receive military assistance from the United States. In mid-2024, the Kenya Defence Forces inducted UH-1 Huey helicopters, while earlier deliveries from US Africa Command included thousands of sets of body armor, ballistic helmets, and ballistic plates, reinforcing troop protection and operational effectiveness.
