In a move to enhance regional defense capabilities, Lithuania has signed a €28 million agreement with Poland’s MESKO S.A. for the acquisition of GROM man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS). This step comes amid ongoing geopolitical tensions near NATO’s eastern frontier, with Lithuania intensifying efforts to modernize its armed forces.
More than a routine procurement, this deal reflects Lithuania’s strategic aim to close capability gaps in its multi-layered air defense framework, reinforcing its preparedness against low-altitude air incursions. The Lithuanian Ministry of Defense views the acquisition as a critical component of its defense reform agenda.
The GROM MANPADS, developed by MESKO, is tailored for quick-reaction air defense and is capable of engaging low-flying threats such as drones, helicopters, and attack aircraft. The missile is powered by a solid-fuel rocket motor and guided by an infrared homing system, allowing operators to lock on to targets by heat signature.
With a strike range of up to 5.5 km and an engagement altitude of 3.5 km, the GROM carries a 1.35 kg high-explosive warhead, enabling it to effectively destroy aerial threats with precision. Its man-portable nature ensures rapid deployment in mobile or frontline environments, making it an ideal fit for Lithuania’s evolving defense needs.
