Charles River Analytics has received a $1 million award from the US Navy to create a program that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to recognize enemy submarines based on their magnetic signals. The Guidance for Naval Enhancement of Tactical Operations (MAGNETO) tool takes advantage of the fact that submarines, which are composed of ferromagnetic materials, distort the Earth’s magnetic field, in contrast to conventional acoustic detection techniques.However, the company clarified that effective anti-submarine warfare requires more than just the ability to detect magnetic fields.
