Lockheed Martin Canada has awarded Thales Canada a contract to provide the advanced S2087 towed array sonar system for the Royal Canadian Navy’s future River-class destroyers, significantly strengthening Canada’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities. The S2087, part of the widely deployed CAPTAS sonar family, is designed to detect and track submarines at long distances in both littoral and deep-ocean environments. Already operational aboard British Type 23 frigates and selected for future Type 26 and Hunter-class warships, the system has established a strong international reputation. The acquisition enhances interoperability among Five Eyes partners, with Canada becoming the third alliance member to field the sonar. Thales will work closely with Canadian industry to provide lifecycle support, ensuring long-term maintenance, upgrades, and sovereign sustainment capabilities. The sonar will equip Canada’s future River-class destroyers, a fleet of 15 advanced warships intended to replace Halifax-class frigates and retired Iroquois-class destroyers. Together with modern combat systems, missiles, helicopters, and unmanned systems, the S2087 will help ensure the River-class becomes one of the most capable anti-submarine warfare platforms in Canadian naval history.
