Germany has awarded Rheinmetall a major contract to extend the service life and upgrade the capabilities of the Navy’s F123-class frigate Bayern. Valued at several hundred million euros, the modernization program will keep the vessel operational until at least 2035, with work scheduled through 2029 at Rheinmetall’s Neue Jadewerft facility in Wilhelmshaven. The upgrade package will introduce a new combat management system, improved radar capabilities, and extensive modernization of the ship’s propulsion, drive, and engineering systems. Rheinmetall will also enhance the frigate’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities, strengthening its effectiveness in future maritime operations. Bayern entered service in 1996 and is one of four Brandenburg-class frigates operated by the German Navy. Measuring 138.8 meters in length and displacing approximately 4,900 tons, the vessel can achieve speeds of around 29 knots. The program will provide Germany with an upgraded naval asset while supporting the fleet’s readiness during the transition toward newer warships.
