US Commits Fresh $150M to Shield AI’s X-BAT Development Program — Shield AI’s X-BAT vertical takeoff and landing combat aircraft has received another $150-million government investment to advance development ahead of planned flight testing later this year. The funding comes through the Pentagon’s Defense Exportability Features program and will be matched by an additional $150 million from the company. This follows a $50-million government investment announced in August under the Runway Independent Maritime Expeditionary Strike effort. Including matching contributions, total announced government and company commitments to X-BAT have reached $400 million. Designed to operate without conventional runways, the aircraft is intended to launch and recover vertically from ships, islands, and remote sites. Shield AI plans to use its Hivemind autonomy software to support operations in communication-denied environments. Development is progressing alongside partnerships for engine integration, manufacturing, testing, and overseas support. In July, GE Aerospace and Shield AI completed engine light-off testing following the integration of a thrust-vectoring nozzle with the F110-GE-129E engine selected for the aircraft. Shield AI has also outlined a US industrial network that includes X-Forge 2 in Newton, Kansas, for flight testing and sustainment, X-Forge 3 in Des Moines, Washington, for manufacturing, and a third planned site in Frisco, Texas, supporting production and delivery. Overseas, an agreement with Greece’s GEK TERNA will explore component production, aircraft integration, and long-term sustainment, while a letter of intent with Poland’s PGZ and WZL-2 covers possible aircraft design, manufacturing, delivery, and support activities. These investments and partnerships are intended to establish the infrastructure needed to advance X-BAT toward future operational use.
