Six Firms Selected to Build Army Robots for Resupply and Medical EvacuationThe US Army has chosen six technology and defense companies to develop unmanned ground vehicles capable of supporting troops in forward operating areas.The project falls under the Army’s Infantry Last Tactical Mile program, which is focused on solving a specific battlefield problem: moving supplies and casualties through areas where conventional vehicles and soldiers could face significant risks.Maren-Go, Overland AI, Forterra, Hendrick’s Motorsports, American Rheinmetall, and HDT have been selected to build prototypes. The Army will use the effort to examine how autonomous ground platforms can perform practical missions alongside infantry formations.Frontline troops require a continuous flow of supplies, but delivering those supplies can become increasingly difficult as vehicles move closer to contested areas. Every additional crew member or soldier involved in the mission can potentially increase the number of personnel exposed to danger.UGVs provide one possible solution. Autonomous or remotely supervised vehicles could carry supplies over the final portion of the logistics chain without requiring a conventional crewed vehicle for every movement.The technology could also have medical applications. Robotic vehicles may be used to recover casualties from locations where sending another manned vehicle could create additional risks for rescuers.By selecting six companies, the Army can investigate different approaches to autonomous navigation, vehicle design, payload transportation, and battlefield mobility. The resulting prototypes are expected to help establish which capabilities are most useful to infantry units.The program represents another step toward integrating robotics into routine military operations. Instead of limiting unmanned vehicles to specialized roles, the Army is examining their potential for everyday support missions that directly affect the ability of frontline troops to operate effectively.
