Raytheon has completed another successful developmental milestone for its Next Generation Short Range Interceptor (NGSRI), a modern shoulder-fired air defense missile being developed to replace the aging Stinger weapon system. During a series of controlled evaluations, multiple interceptors accurately engaged representative airborne targets after independently acquiring and tracking them using advanced guidance technologies. The weapon integrates a newly designed launch assembly, an imaging seeker capable of improved target discrimination, sophisticated onboard processing software, and a high-performance solid rocket motor. These improvements are intended to enhance engagement effectiveness against increasingly diverse threats, including unmanned aerial systems, cruise missiles, rotary-wing aircraft, and low-flying fixed-wing platforms. The latest demonstration confirms steady progress toward delivering a lightweight, highly mobile air defense capability that offers improved precision, survivability, and operational flexibility for ground forces operating in modern contested environments.
