Swedish defense manufacturer Saab has been awarded a $270 million development contract by Sweden’s Defence Materiel Administration to advance the Gripen fighter system through the end of the decade. The funding will support development efforts running until 2028, ensuring the platform remains capable against emerging aerial and electronic warfare threats.

The contract covers testing operations, support of flight test aircraft, and the use of advanced simulation and validation tools, including high-fidelity rigs and training simulators. These resources allow Saab to test new capabilities, verify system performance, and refine upgrades before operational deployment across Gripen fleets.

According to Saab, sustained investment in testing, validation, and simulation infrastructure is a critical factor in maintaining modern fighter aircraft readiness. Development efforts under the contract include integration of new sensors, avionics upgrades, expanded weapons options, and operational enhancements identified through ongoing flight testing and operational feedback.

The Gripen fighter serves as a highly adaptable multirole platform with advanced networking and real-time data-sharing capabilities. In addition to Sweden, the aircraft is in service with several international operators, including Brazil’s Gripen E fleet and South Africa’s Gripen C/D aircraft, all of which benefit from continuous modernization programs led by Saab.
