Boeing has received the first Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) P-8A Poseidon for a series of advanced Increment 3 Block 2 upgrades designed to boost the aircraft’s surveillance and strike capabilities. The modernization is being carried out at Boeing’s Jacksonville facility in Florida, USA.
The upgrade package introduces new antennas, sensors, and advanced software improvements that enhance computing power and secure communications. These enhancements will strengthen the P-8A’s role in intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance (ISR), and anti-submarine warfare missions.
Australia has become the first international P-8A customer to benefit from the Increment 3 modification, reinforcing its strategic edge in maritime domain awareness. Boeing secured a 139.5 million Australian dollar ($90.5 million) contract for the program in 2024, with the first two aircraft being modified in Jacksonville and the remainder scheduled for upgrade at Boeing Defence Australia’s (BDA) South Australia facility.
To support the large-scale upgrade project, more than 30 aircraft maintenance apprentices and trainees have already joined BDA’s workforce. As the project progresses, around 30 additional positions are expected to be created, providing a boost to Australia’s local defense industry and engineering talent pipeline.
