Israel has signed a 15-year agreement worth approximately 600 million shekels ($190 million) with Elbit Systems to establish and operate an advanced training and simulation centre for the IDF Artillery Corps. The facility will prepare personnel to operate the SIGMA self-propelled howitzer and PULS multiple rocket launcher, with the aim of reducing qualification times, improving operational proficiency and lowering training costs while limiting wear on operational equipment. Elbit will develop a comprehensive training infrastructure featuring mission and driving simulators, classrooms and specialised facilities, alongside training, maintenance and technical support throughout the contract. The programme supports the introduction of two advanced artillery platforms into Israel’s armed forces. SIGMA, designated Ro’em by the IDF, is a 155mm self-propelled howitzer developed by Elbit Systems in cooperation with the Israeli military. Its automated loading and gun-positioning systems are designed to accelerate firing operations and reduce crew workload. Development began in 2019, and the wheeled platform is intended to replace the IDF’s legacy M109 tracked howitzers. It offers a maximum range of approximately 40 kilometres and improved tactical mobility. PULS, known as LAHAV in Israel, is a modular multiple rocket launcher that uses interchangeable launch pods to fire various guided and unguided rockets and missiles. Its maximum engagement range reaches approximately 300 kilometres, depending on the ammunition employed. The new training centre is expected to improve the readiness of artillery personnel, streamline the transition to the new weapon systems and strengthen the IDF’s ability to operate its modernised artillery fleet.
