A new US Army order will see American Rheinmetall manufacture thousands of MK93 weapon mounts while upgrading hundreds of existing systems. The contract, valued at $20.7 million, covers production of 3,104 new mounts and modernization of 245 units. Work will be conducted at Rheinmetall’s Maine production site, with the programme scheduled to continue until October 2027 and initial deliveries planned from 2026. The procurement was handled through ADS and the Defense Logistics Agency. The Army has not specified which vehicles or formations will receive the equipment. The MK93 is designed to support two widely used weapons—the M2 heavy machine gun and MK19 40mm grenade launcher. Its soft-mount design is intended to reduce the effects of recoil, helping the gunner maintain stability and accuracy. Rheinmetall’s MK93 modernization kit, introduced in 2018, incorporates a redesigned cradle to further improve recoil management and firing performance. It also includes a shoulder bar that makes the weapon easier to handle and can reduce operator fatigue during prolonged use. The latest order highlights American Rheinmetall’s expanding role in US defense programmes. The company recently delivered the first Lynx XM30 prototype to the Army for testing under the programme intended to replace the M2 Bradley. Rheinmetall is leading Team Lynx with American industry partners. The company has also received a Marine Corps contract for Mission Master SP autonomous UGVs and amphibious kits, while another Army programme involves hybrid autonomous vehicles for logistics missions.
